Farage’s mega donors have exposed the fatal flaw in Starmer's Elections Bill. Capping all political donations would be simple, popular - and transformative.
Of course donations should be capped for everyone, not just non-residents. And the £100 000 limit proposed is ludicrously too high - who has 100K lying about to give to a party except but the ultra-rich ? A limit of £1000, as is set in Canada, would actually be democratic. Once again, Labour proves that it is anything but the party of labour.
Personally I’d like to see a much lower limit than £100k too but I’m also wary of the perfect being the enemy of the good. The government has been incredibly resistant to a cap - and given that they have already committed to a £100k cap on Britons abroad - then I think £100k is the strongest case to make right now
Agreed, they've painted themselves in a corner with the 100K for non-residents. They should really have capped it at zero for non-residents. It's what a normal country would do.
Given how much private health has given to Labour MPs, we really need to look at capping all donations not just ones to the parties. Otherwise we're just opening up new loopholes.
And of course we need to know who's funding "independent" think tanks, too.
Absolutely! Elections should be publicly funded. I lived in the States for 37 years and witnessed first-hand the corrosive effect of money in politics. Britain is on the brink of following the US down that path. Stepping back from that brink is overdue. Stamer should stop pussyfooting and impose funding caps and/or re-introduce public funding at once.Yes, agree with JM Lapointe; this is emphatically NOT the party of working people.
It's all basically bribery. Giving more than £1,000 is asking to direct policy which is the right of the voter shouldn't be tolerated. It's the peoples government not the exclusive right of the rich to have a say in what the majority want. This is leading down that slippery slope that the USA has gotten itself into and we are witnessing how that has failed the majority of voters in real time. Wars for profit and favour.
Totally agree; Starmer/Labour could stop Reform in its tracks if they really wanted. Of course it would stop donations like Quadrature gave to Labour too...
Facebook suggests there a petition for this, there have been a few on e.g. petition.parliament.uk but none have got very far - too much fragmentation perhaps?

Stop direct payments to MPs as well. Private healthcare companies are donating directly to MPs. In a normal world that is called bribery.
We should be doing blitz letter writing to mps on this!
